What Are SIPs Panels Made Of?

Structural insulated panels, or SIPs, are innovative construction materials ideal for constructing the exterior walls of extensions, annexes, home gyms, studios, and garden rooms.

Although relatively new to the UK market, SIP buildings are used extensively in other countries, including the US, to provide extra space for families. These foam core panels are also widely used to construct light commercial buildings.

The SIP construction process is speedy, and the finished buildings are warm, strong, and stylish, with outstanding energy efficiency.

What are SIPs panels made of?

Creating structural insulated panels or SIPs

SIPs are created by pressing two structural facings, usually oriented strand boards (OSB panels), with an insulating foam core of expanded polystyrene injected at high pressure into the space between the panels.

The panels are hardened and matured in a hydraulic press.

Some SIP manufacturers use other sheathing materials, like sheet metal or magnesium oxide board. Our SIPs are manufactured under factory-controlled conditions using OSB panels from wood sourced from managed forests.

The panels can be cut to virtually any size and shape according to customer requirements, allowing for the construction of highly bespoke buildings.

SIPs panels are made of sustainable material

We use sustainable wood from managed forests. The idea of SIPs construction came from an eco-friendly building tradition designed to conserve forest resources. You can read more about the sustainability of SIPs on the Structural Insulated Panel Association website here.

The thermal performance of structural insulated panels

Structural insulated panels, or SIPs, have many advantages, as we shall see, but one of their most impressive qualities is their thermal performance.

The rigid insulation core of each structural insulated panel makes buildings built with this method highly energy efficient.

In addition, the panel joints in the SIPs wall systems are designed to fit together tightly. The application of foam sealant ensures no thermal bridging or weak points to allow cold or damp air infiltration into the building. SIPs provide a superior vapour barrier to timber frame buildings while retaining good indoor air quality.

Properly sealed SIPs are air-tight and provide comfortable temperatures all year round.

What does the structure of SIPs panels mean for the builder?

The structure of SIPs panels offers several advantages over traditional construction methods for the builder.

Wall construction takes place off-site

A significant proportion of the building process, specifically the wall construction, occurs off-site as SIP walls are produced and cut to size in a factory.

Weather conditions are never a problem, and the SIPs panels can be delivered to the building site within days with complete instructions for speedy construction.

Pre-made wall panels allow for speedy construction

As the wall systems have already been manufactured, the SIP installation method requires little input from trades like bricklaying and joinery.

The low weight of SIPs walls means that deep foundations are unnecessary. Exterior sip walls can stand on existing foundations or a concrete base.

The panels are extremely strong but light, and a small team can assemble and make the building watertight within a few days. Electrical wiring and plumbing can then be installed as with more conventional framing.

Reduced construction waste

The wall systems are made to measure and won’t require cutting on-site, resulting in zero waste to remove.

SIPs construction is quick and clean to build and can be completed speedily with a minimal workforce.

The advantages of the structure of SIPs panels for the building owner

Structural insulated panels offer several advantages to the building owner.

Cost-effectiveness

The relatively quick SIP construction process and the small team required save the customer money.

Extensions and garden rooms made of structurally insulated panels are so energy efficient that, in the long term, the owner will have reduced heating costs.

Durability

The materials used in structural insulated panels make them extremely strong. Once built, SIPs structures are three times stronger than a comparable brick-built construction and seven times sturdier than a wood-frame construction.

Oriented strand board is resistant to pests, and its fire resistance properties are greater than those required by British Fire Safety regulations.

Flexible design

Our factory makes structural insulated panels, which are cut to the shape and size specified by the customer.

This fabrication process allows the customer to design an extension or garden building to suit their requirements, although many choose to consult an architect.

SIPs panels provide excellent structural support, and the external walls are suitable for a variety of exterior cladding options.

Suitable for home builders

The simplicity of SIP construction allows a competent home builder with some relevant experience to assemble the project themselves.

We can provide a bespoke extension kit with the required structural insulated panels and full assembly instructions.

 Frequently asked questions

How much do structural insulated panels cost?

The cost of each structural insulated panel will depend on its size and the cost of your entire project will depend on the number of panels.

You can obtain an indicative quick quote by inputting the dimensions of your SIPs project here.

Can SIPs structures be used all year round?

The insulating foam core inside each structural insulated panel is so energy efficient that SIPs buildings are easy to keep warm all year round, even in cold climates.
