Different ways to use your garden room

Home office

Our kits are often used for garden offices and are a great way to accommodate home working, providing a dedicated space away from the noise and distractions of the family home. Crossing the garden to the home office is a commute to envy, and will certainly benefit the work-life balance.

Art studio or hobby room

Garden rooms can make an ideal art studio or hobby room as they can be built with plenty of glazing to let in sunlight. Spending time surrounded by nature in a garden studio is relaxing, and the green space may fire up creativity.

Garden Gym

Many customers use an extension kit to install a garden gym. Garden buildings are ideal for workouts as they offer privacy and a quiet space. Our extension kits are made to meet specific customer requirements, so they can fit as much gym equipment and storage as desired.

Your garden gym would also make a great location for a yoga studio or meditation space.

Guest Accommodation

Your garden room would be useful extra accommodation for when guests come to visit or simply a space to entertain friends in comfort.

A peaceful haven

A garden room extension kit could be used to create a relaxing summer house retreat or even a ‘man cave’ or ‘woman cave’ to provide a bit of tranquillity away from a busy household.

With all these benefits, it’s no surprise that 85% of homeowners who add a garden room report increased happiness and satisfaction with their home.

What materials are in a garden room extension kit?

Our garden room extension kits contain everything the customer needs to construct a garden room, including easy-to-use assembly details.

The main components are the structurally insulated panels or SIPs, that provide the walls and floor of the garden room.

SIPs are made in our own factory and are constructed by sandwiching two structural facing boards together with thermally efficient foam.

The SIPS method of construction gives unrivalled versatility as the panels can be made to measure, providing an ideal solution for the installation of buildings of most sizes. The glazing and door will also be included in the kit when requested.

The kit also includes all the information required for the assembly and installation of the garden room.

How long does it take for an extension kit to arrive?

As soon as an order is received, our factory team starts to work on cutting and sizing the SIPs to meet the customer’s requirements.

Once the panels have been cut, including the apertures for windows and doors, the garden room will be fully assembled as part of our quality checking. As the components are disassembled, they are numbered to make it easy to reassemble them on-site.

Delivery of the garden room extension kit usually takes about 10 to 15 days after the order has been received and the deposit is paid.

Foundation requirements

The garden room will need to be installed on a concrete base or on screw piles. It may be possible to reuse the base of a previous building like a shed, garage or other garden building.

The construction process

The construction of the SIPS panels means that although they are extremely strong, they are also light and easy to lift and handle, even in the tightest space. Our garden room kits can be assembled in less time than a traditional building and by smaller teams, saving on time and labour costs.

Our extension kits are used by building professionals, but competent home builders with some relevant experience and the correct tools for the job also find assembly easy due to the simplicity of the structure and the clear instructions provided.

Customers who find assembling their garden room difficult can call upon our Build Assist service for professional advice.

Insulation and energy efficiency

One of the big advantages of SIP’s layered construction is the wall thickness and the thermal efficiency of the foam insulation.

The extension kits offer a variety of insulation widths. Customers can choose between 97 mm, 122mm, 147mm, or 172mm. Depending on the wall thickness used, the heating energy required to keep the garden room snug in all seasons can be reduced by as much as 60%.

If clients plan to use the office all year round as a home office, for example, then the choice of insulation level is an important decision.

Environmental sustainability

Our garden room kits are an environmentally sustainable choice for a variety of reasons.

  • The wood used to construct the panels is sourced from forests managed by the Forest Stewardship Council.
  • Our factory production methods use less energy and raw materials than producing the timber and brick used in other types of build.
  • The low weight of the panels means that transportation requires less energy.

Choosing the right location

Customers put a great deal of thought into the design of a garden room, so make sure that its best side can be seen from the house so that the results can be enjoyed.
Other location considerations include:

  • Privacy for people using the garden room – do some windows need to be out of view of the house or neighbours?
  • Privacy for neighbours – they may not be happy if the window of your home office looks directly into their home.
  • Proximity to access points – placing the garden room too close to the side entry or path may make it difficult to bring large items into or out of the garden.
  • Proximity to boundaries – if your garden has low fences or hedges, your neighbour may find a large visible structure annoying.

Designing the garden room

The design of your garden room will depend on how you want to use it. The versatility of our extension kits is in the fact that we can cut the panels to create an outdoor building of virtually any size.

Some clients have a firm idea of how they want their project to look and produce their own drawings, but others use an architect or work up their ideas with our in-house design team.

External design

We offer a range of finishes for our garden rooms, including brick slips, aluminium or composite cladding and render. We also offer a choice of roof tiles. Many customers choose to put landscaping around their garden room so that it blends in with the rest of the garden environment.

We have noticed that many of our customers choose to add a touch of luxury with modern lighting, beautiful green plants and comfortable flooring.

Do I need planning permission to build a garden room?

Many garden buildings can be installed without planning permission, but it is always a good idea to check with the local planning office before beginning a garden room project.

Customers are welcome to contact us for advice as we have many years of experience in applying for planning permission.

Maintenance and Upkeep of Garden Rooms

Garden rooms created with one of our extension kits will give many years of pleasure and require minimal maintenance as SIP panels do not rot or degrade with time or exposure to the elements.

SIPS panels are up to seven times stronger than timber and can withstand all the wind and weather can throw at them.

Our SIP panels have been subjected to the most rigorous testing and comply with or exceed all British building standards, including British Fire Safety regulations.

We are so confident in the longevity and durability of our SIPS products that our garden room extension kits have a ten year guarantee.
