Are Modular Extensions Any Good?

If you are looking for a cost-effective way to add living space to your home, you may be wondering if modular extensions are any good.

We can answer confidently that our modern home extensions are an excellent way to extend your home.

The benefits of adding living space with a modular build compare frequently with some aspects of a traditional extension.

Read on to learn more about this increasingly popular method of home improvement.

What is a modular extension?

Traditional extensions are constructed on-site by various tradesmen, such as bricklayers and carpenters.

A modular or prefabricated extension is installed rather than built using building modules—including walls, floors, and ceilings— manufactured in a factory.

What are the modules made of?

Our modular extension kits contain components made from structural insulated panels (SIPs).

The SIPs are manufactured in our factory in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester. They consist of two structural panels stuck together with foam under high pressure.

The panels are cut to the size and shape provided by the customer and delivered on-site, where they can be installed by professional builders.

Unlike traditional home extensions, our kits come with detailed instructions, making assembly suitable for competent homeowners with construction experience.

What do modular extensions look like?

Our modular extensions come with a range of cladding, brick slip, and render options so that they can blend seamlessly with your existing property.

Your extension design can include all the usual features of a traditional extension, including bi-folding doors, a tiled roof, and double-glazed windows.

You can see examples of stunning projects completed using SIPs and our extension kits here.

Is modular construction only appropriate for adding extra living space?

Modular extensions are ideal for a single-storey living space, a kitchen extension, orangery or a conservatory.

We also have many delighted customers who have used our SIPs extension kits to build garden rooms for home offices, art studios or gyms.

Are modular extensions any good?

The benefits of modular extensions over conventional extensions

Quicker to install

Traditional home extensions can take many weeks to build, causing considerable disruption to family life.

By contrast, the shell of your new SIPs modular extension can be erected within days, minimising disruption to family and costs.

Warmer and more energy-efficient

SIP constructions are completely airtight and have a higher U value than other types of buildings.

The foam at the centre of the panels is highly energy efficient, keeping the extension warm and cosy while keeping heating energy costs low.

Stronger than a traditional build

The structure of the panels means that SIP constructions are three times stronger and more durable than traditionally built extensions.

Make better use of the footprint of the building

Traditional brick extensions have thick walls. SIPs are slimmer, so they can create larger floor spaces with the same footprint.

The panels’ high level of thermal efficiency and structural strength ensure that this is achieved without compromising build quality or insulation.

How is my modular extension provided?

We will provide everything you need in a kit delivered to your home.

Your extension will have been constructed in our 40,000-square-foot factory to ensure it fits perfectly. As it is disassembled, the components will be numbered for easy on-site assembly.

Do modular extensions comply with building regulations?

Our extension kits contain the highest-quality materials and, when correctly assembled and installed, comply with all building regulations.

Will I need planning permission?

Depending on the size of the extension, you may be able to build it without planning permission under permitted development rights.

If in doubt, contact your local planning office for advice or talk to us. We have years of experience dealing with planning permission.
